Coming to terms with what has past

I realize now that I had posted an entry on our blog in the spring about my nephews illness. For those of you that have followed his journey through our website, you already know the outcome. For those of you that have not, it was not an easy one.

Right now it has been 4 months since we lost Jonathan. It is still raw, but it is only now really beginning to sink in. September was incredibly difficult for me and my family. Jonathan was to begin Kindergarten, and he would also have turned 5. October is also breast cancer awareness month, and the big "C" word (cancer) seems to be everywhere right now.

Shortly after Jonathan passed away, I created a necklace in his honor. I added his favorite sayings and things that had meaning for me in regards to him. I keep this with me in my room, and I hold it when I am looking for strength. I would like to share it with you today, because for me I used creating it as a vessel for my grief, and I feel that sharing it is another way for me to come to terms with all that has past and move to forward.

This coming weekend will be our first Thanksgiving without Jonathan. But I feel so thankful that we were able to share in this little guys life and to have learned so much from him during his short time with us. We all miss him so terribly much. Thanks for listening. Enjoy your family this weekend, and don't forget to never take "I love you" for granted.

Eat, sleep, drink....etsy

This is more of a personal entry than my usual post about the jewelry we have been creating.

For the past two days I have been thinking about our shop on etsy. I am currently trying to redo most of the photos on etsy to give our shop a more unified look, but the more time I spend on etsy, the more I seem to add to my to do list.

Holiday shopping will hopefully be gearing up soon. Locally we have the upcoming Craft show in November to look forward too, and we have our jewellery at the Down to Earth Health Shop and also at Fort Gifts & Things, but I would also really like to see us have a successful year for 2009 online and that means that I have a lot of learning to do!

Seems almost funny that I am already planning how I will do things differently in the new year, and we are still a couple months from there.

I have been in quite a funk lately, this year has been one big roller coaster ride. I am finally starting to feel like I am beginning to get my groove back. I have certainly been lax in updating the blog and making jewellery with all of the upheaval in our lives over the past year but I feel as though I have finally found a jumping off point and am ready to get back on track.

Getting back on track as I have found, mean completely rebuilding the road reassessing the direction I am heading in. This is a work in progress.

I have a real passion for the jewelry I create. This is my jumping off point. - Thank for listening, now back to our regularly scheduled programing.

Caring for and cleaning your copper jewelry

Anyone who knows me knows how passionate I feel about copper jewellery. Perhaps it started because I was referred to as "Copper-top" as a child, but now I love and appreciate it for the warm glow it emanates and the way its richness deepens with time and I love the way it works "with me" when it is in my hands. I love copper. I also love the versatility copper gives you by way of aging. I have been known to hang my copper necklaces in the bathroom while I shower for a week or so, to hurry things along. But what makes it truly endearing is how quickly I can restore it to its orangy shine with a quick cleaning. (by quick, I mean 30 seconds or less).

Copper was one of the first metals that human hands worked with when creating jewelry. Its malleability allowed for early tools to easily manipulate it in to many forms.

Copper is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.

Copper and Health

Copper has long been associated with many health benefits. I will touch a few of the better known associations, but as with any responsible Internet citizen, research for yourself before trying everything your read.

You can find a wonderful overview on many of the uses of copper here.

Biocidal copper is used in doorknobs and plumbing systems for its antibacterial properties. There is a wonderful article here that covers many of these aspects of copper.

Copper is also used to aid in relief from Bursitis, Rheumatism and Arthritis. You will see many people wearing copper bracelets for this reason, ask them their opinion!

Coppers Metaphysical Properties

Copper is associated with opening and activating the base and sacral chakras -and directing these energies to ones path to evolution.

Copper is said to allow for mental agility and quick wit.

Astrological signs related to Copper: Taurus and Sagittarius

Elements: Earth and Fire

In alchemy the symbol for copper was also the symbol for the goddess and the planet Venus.

Caring for and cleaning your raw copper jewelry

Dipping your copper jewellery in a mixture of lemon juice and salt will clean it and restore it to a bright shine. Rinse the piece well after dipping and dry it before storing. When storing your copper jewellery, keep it in a moisture proof container or zip lock bag. You can also add a "silical gel" package (those little packets you find in new purses, backpacks, etc that say "do not eat") to absorb any moisture and prevent tarnishing.

If you have a piece of copper jewelry that has been treated to obtain a patina, simply wipe it clean with a soft cotton cloth to preserve the patina.

It is normal for copper to leave a slight green mark on your skin. This is because the copper is reacting to the salts in your skin. This is easily washed off with bit of soap and water. A clear coat of nail polish on the areas where the copper touches your skin will prevent this from occurring, however, you will not receive any of the health benefits associated with copper once you coat it.

Wear your copper jewellery proudly, love your copper jewelry dearly and enjoy your copper jewellery fully.

Hug the ones you love

It has been a wild and crazy ride these past couple of weeks. Last week my little 4 year old nephew was medi-vaced to Edmonton Children’s hospital and then diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumor, a childhood cancer. You can read more about Jonathan’s Journey here.

I have been away from home for a week now while our family gathers to support my brother and his family and I find myself seriously in need of some pliers and wire. Making jewelry for me is an escape and I find myself wondering if I should not keep an emergency jewellery tool kit in my car for those unexpected moments when I need some stress relief. Thank goodness I am in Fort Nelson right now, because you can be sure that I am going over to Rachel’s for a little wrap and hammer therapy tonight.

I will keep you posted on Jonathan’s progress over the next little while and hopefully will find some time to make some new pretties to share with you. Until then, please keep my nephew in your prayers and take some time to hug your kids, because you never know what life will throw at you next.

Bless you all,

It has been a busy week at WireDreamz. Today we added over 20 new items to our shop! Rachel has been busy creating with her PolyClay and has made some really amazing pieces. Check the beautiful brooch she has made! Rachel's jewelry this week is loaded with wonderful spring time colors. All of the blues and pinks are a real pick me up.

I am still on a copper kick, I just can not get enough of the stuff. This week I have been pounding away and adding some dialogue to my pieces. I think that my favorite new item this week was the Safari Earrings. But I had so much fun making everything, I have a hard time picking just one.

The Laugh Often bracelet is a good example of how we put our all into our jewellery. I almost hammered my own finger off when I was making this one. But, I think the end result was worth the pain (and cursing), and I think I will get to keep that nail for now.

We have a new poll this week. Be sure to cast your vote!

As always, if you can not find what you are looking for, perhaps we can create it just for you! Send us a message to info@WireDreamz.com and we will work with you to create just what you need.

We are always looking for feedback, if you have any ideas that you would like to share with us we would love to hear from you. Simply send us an email to info@WireDreamz.com and bend our ears.

Plenty of new items have been added this week to our shop! This past week I had the pleasure of being home, as I took a week of holidays from my "conventional" job. I have been busy over the week, working on my soldering and creating up a storm. The inspiration and the ideas did not stop flowing. In fact, I have enough ideas sketched down that I can keep myself busy for quite sometime the next time I find myself having a creative block.

Two themes that I found myself engrossed in this past week were heart and zigzags. You will find plenty of new items in our shop this week based on these themes, as well as a couple of different pieces, Elliptic and Papillon (French for butterfly).

The firebug in me came out to play this week as well. I worked on my soldering technique and was pleasantly surprised by a few items that turned out exactly as I had envisioned them. Others were disasters and are better left in the "what not to do next time" pile.

On the website front, we have added a couple of new Gallery pages and some interesting links on our "links" page for you to check out. As you can see, we have also added a poll on this blog. Let us know what you think by sending us a reply to this post.

I hope that Valentine's Day was good to all of you. I am very excited that Rachel and I will have an opportunity to work together in a couple of weeks when she travels down here to visit me in the newly warm, yet very windy city of Dawson Creek. Who knows what amazing things we will come up with when we put our heads together, stay tuned!
